Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What
does a midwife do?
A: A Midwife is a trained professional who provides comprehensive
care and support during pregnancy, labour, birth and the six week
postpartum period to healthy women and their newborns.
Q: Does it cost to use midwifery services?
A: No, Registered Midwives are fully covered under the BC Medical
Services Plan.
Q: If I see a midwife, do I see
my doctor as well?
A: Registered Midwives provide comprehensive care during
pregnancy, birth, and the post partum period. You do not need to
see a doctor for your maternity care as well. Midwives consult and
/ or refer to the appropriate medical specialists when risk factors
arise during pregnancy, labour birth, or the postpartum period.
We follow the College of Midwivesof BC protocols for consultation
and transfer of care. If care should need to be transferred to a
specialist, your midwife can remain in supportive care.
Q: How do I know if my midwife is qualified?
A: She will be registered by the College
of Midwives of BC. Check their website for a list of qualified
midwives.
Q: Can I
deliver my baby in hospital if I have a midwife?
A: Yes. We have admitting and discharge privileges at both
the Victoria General Hospital and the Saanich Peninsula Hospital.
We can offer women and their families a choice of birthplace. The
hospital is the choice for many women. Healthy women, with no identified
risk factors, also have the option to deliver in their own homes.
Midwives discuss the risks and benefits of these options throughout
the pregnancy.
Q: Can midwives order blood tests and ultrasounds?
A: Yes, we can order
all commonly used blood tests and ultrasound for diagnostic purposes
in pregnancy.
Q: I had a
caesarean birth. Can I have a midwife for this pregnancy?
A: Yes, You can choose a midwife regardless of previous caesarean
sections. Most of the women in our care who have had a previous ceasarean
section have gone on to deliver naturally. If a caesarean section
becomes necessary, the midwife will remain in attendance.
