Qualifications
Registered
midwives in British Columbia are regulated by the College
of Midwives of BC (CMBC). Every midwife registered with the
College has passed examinations set by the College. The CMBC registers
midwives who demonstrate a high standard of competency and safety
and who have successfully completed rigorous assessments and examinations.
The CMBC has developed a regulatory framework of standards and policies
that will ensure Registered Midwives work safely and appropriately.
The standards of practice support informed choice for women and
choice of birth setting.
The policies
developed are based on current research and evidence. CMBC standards
require Registered Midwives to be competent to provide care in both
home and hospital settings.
In British Columbia, the title "midwife" is protected by law. Only
those who have been assessed and found to meet all of the requirements
for registration in BC and are registered with the College
of Midwives of BC may call themselves "midwife".
At present, BC is one of three provinces in Canada with an entry
level Midwifery Education program. The BC education program is situated
at the University of British Columbia and will be enrolling the
first class of midwifery students in September 2002. The two other
provinces with midwifery education programs are Ontario and Quebec.
They are all 4 year baccalaureate level programs.
Midwives recognized in other jurisdictions may also apply to the
College of Midwives for registration in British Columbia. These
midwives will be assessed in the College's Prior Learning and Experience
Assessment Process.
